The south and north additions to the Mansion were built right up against the outside of the 1758 house. But my favorite way to get to Mount Vernon is to take the 25-mile George Washington Memorial Parkway. The National Park Service parkway begins at Exit 14 off Interstate 495 west of Washington, D.C., continues along the Potomac River through Alexandria, and ends at the roundabout at Mount Vernon. Along the way the Parkway passes several other NPS monuments and memorials, Gravelly Point Park, and Jones Point Park.
